The CUNY Graduate Center’s Workshop on Crime & the Law meets monthly to review and discuss draft manuscripts, book chapters, and dissertation chapters in a collaborative and critical setting. The workshop is open to all graduate students and faculty in the NYC area interested in criminology and related fields. Rough drafts are circulated in advance of each workshop for participants to read and generate questions and feedback. The goal of the workshop is to build a community space at CUNY to discuss emerging theories, methods, and perspectives, and support each other in developing our respective work.
This workshop re-inaugurates a long-standing disciplinary interest at the Graduate Center. In 2013, Lynn Chancer (professor and current executive officer of the Graduate Center’s doctoral program in sociology) started a criminology workshop working with graduate students and a stellar group of faculty, which lasted a number of years until the COVID-19 pandemic. We are proud to be re-launching the workshop to help build community among faculty and students, and to assist with writing collaborations and event planning. Faculty who were previously associated with the workshop include the late and much missed Jock Young, prior faculty organizers Jayne Mooney and Candace McCoy, and other well-known faculty in our program and throughout the CUNY system.
